One Night Only: Black Hair Makes Magic Again!

The Harrisburg (PA) Chapter of the Links, Incorporated is hosting Links from several chapters to meet legislators on Capital Hill on National C.R.O.W.N. Act Day, June 3rd. The Links have supported the C.R.O.W.N. Act with petition signings for over a year. The Act would end discrimination in workplaces and schools based on hair texture. This discrimination is the inspiration behind HairStory.

C.R.O.W.N. stands for "Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural" hair. Studies show that Black women with natural hair are 2.5X more likely to be perceived as unprofessional. The discrimination effects how we manage the in the workplace. It starts early and continues through to adulthood creating trauma and less opportunities for success.

Last year, Representative Justin Flemming posted on Facebook that he was remembering the powerful stories from HairStory when he cast his vote in support of the CROWN Act. The Act passed in the House but was shot down in the Senate. The work continues!

The philanthropic women's organization will end their day on the Hill with fine dining and a performance of HairStory: Reclaiming Our Crown at the Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts, IMAX theater. The stylized performance of six actors will be paired with a multimedia presentation on the 20 foot IMAX screen. This will be like nothing you've seen before.

The public is invited to enjoy this upscale event as well. Tickets are $105 for the dinner and the show. The fundraiser benefits the Links' initiatives to develop programs that have a positive impact on the lives of Black women and girls.
