Recently, I was informed that folks have been nominating HairStory: Reclaiming Our Crown for the Broadway World Central PA Regional Awards. I checked out the site and anyone can nominate any of the great shows that have been put on this year for multiple categories. Best New Play, Best Director, Best Dance Production, and more categories are available and they all sound like HairStory to me! I decided to spread the word about this opportunity to show your love for our groundbreaking production. If you attended in May, you will get an email about it this week.
I also hope folks will recognize that this year has been a "Renaissance year" for Black theatre in Harrisburg, PA. In a town where black folks couldn't even get one black play a year to see, we now have multiple black producers, directors, playwrights, and even our first black-owned theatre space! I am proud to have seen Sankofa's Voices of the Eighth, Dr. Faustus at Narcisse Theatre, the Black Improv group at YPOC's Juneteenth celebration and so much more!
There is something in the air, Harrisburg! That "new negro" spirit from 100 years ago is waltzing down Front Street. It's the Harrisburg Rennaissance. Can't you feel it?
